Card making is on the agenda for the Saturday, January 12th class from 10:00 am- 12:00pm. The class is for ages 6-13 and all materials are included. $20 and you can sign-up here.

Does your daughter or son want to learn to knit? A new three week series for kids ages 9 and up will be starting on January 20th from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The remaining two sessions will be on February 3rd and 10th. The cost is $60 and all supplies are included. You can find more information and sign-up here. I learned to knit after my kids were born so it is a relatively new hobby for me. I can’t imagine learning when I was younger and having this skill and hobby for life.

We are so lucky to have such an amazing art studio here in Sonoma. My son and daughter attended a watercolor class over the summer at Artescape and had a wonderful time. I highly recommend their classes!

Have you or your kids ever taken a class at Artescape? Let me know by leaving me a comment!

Looking for Stocking Stuffer Central? Sonoma has you covered!

I am on a huge kick this year to do as much Christmas shopping as I can here in Sonoma. Everywhere I look, experts agree to help the economy in our own town, we must start with shopping locally. So, I hit the streets, looking for the best shops to buy toys and stocking stuffers for my kids while keeping my money here in Sonoma.

Here’s my five best stores you absolutely have to hit-

My first stop was the Marketplace (with CVS and Whole Foods) on at 201 West Napa Street. It has 3 great stores that are stocked to the brim with wonderful stocking stuffers for the kids.

Hollyhocks has rows and rows of puzzles, games and stickers. Prices range from $2.00-$20.00. They will be open on Christmas Eve and offer free wrapping for any item over $15.00. You do need to take your gift over to McCaulous store to get the wrapping.

McCaulou’s Kids, almost next door to Hollyhocks, has a great selection of stocking stuffers ranging in price from $.99 to $4.00 right by the register. Lots of kazoos and hackie sacks and and an entire case of Hello Kitty merchandise. The assortment is great and they have perfect little treats for boys and girls. Also will be open on Christmas Eve until about 4:00.

The last store is the Toy Shop on the end. The stocking stuffers were everywhere and the staff is very helpful. From Playmobil people, to Smencils and milk straws, they have bins filled with many unique and well made kids toys. Go in and check out the adorable stuffed animals and amazing game section! They will be open until about 3:30 on Christmas Eve and have free gift wrapping.

If you skip on over to downtown, your next street to hit is East Napa Street. My first stop was one of my very favorite stores, Tiddle E Winks. The owner, Heidi Geffen, is very friendly and extremely helpful. She can put together any theme you would like, such as baseball or Hello Kitty candies and trinkets, or you can just pick out lovely, little treats from yesteryear. From the Pez candy to the baseballs, your kids stocking will be brimming with treats! Also will be open on Christmas Eve until the last customer has been rung up (“Somewhere around 6:00ish” Heidi says.)

Right across the street you’ll find The Corner Store Kids. With a sign out front asking if I had stocking stuffers, I knew I had found the right place. The shelves are lined with books, marble games and unique stocking stuffers and all at great prices. Hello, Mento’s Geyser Tube and Marble Race Car-My son will love you!

My last stop is a new find down Broadway, almost on your way out of town. Fat Pilgrim has 2 stores that are filled to the brim with great stocking stuffers. Everything from delicious locally made jams to wonderfully smelling soap to chewing gum and jewelry~you are sure to finish up your list here. The adjacent store has all the Christmas decor and ornaments you could want. All were already 30% when I popped in last week. Definitely one of my new local faves!

Well, I hope this helps you to choose local when you have the opportunity. I guarantee your kids won’t be disappointed, your pocketbook, or our wonderful town! Have a wonderful Holiday!

Family-Friendly Ideas to Keep Everyone Happy after Thanksgiving!

The combination of kid’s home from school this week and the grandparents, aunts and uncles all piled into your house for 4 days and you may need a little help coming up with ideas on what to do to keep everyone happy! Here are my favorite picks in Sonoma and beyond to keep the whole family happy the entire weekend-

Pick out a Christmas Tree at a Christmas tree farm- The day after Thanksgiving is when many families start to think about getting their Christmas tree. To many, there’s no better way to get one than to take the trip to one of the many North Bay Christmas tree farms and cut one down themselves! Moon Mountain Christmas Tree Farm is the only real Christmas Tree Farm we have in Sonoma. They grow Douglas, Noble firs and Scotch pines, and do not offer pre-cut trees. You choose your tree, and they cut it and carry it back to your car for you. You can find them on 1550 Moon Mountain Drive, off Highway 12. Open Friday through Sunday, 9 am to 4:30 pm through December 16. (707) 996-6454.Free hot chocolate and cookies too!

Go ice skating in Downtown Napa-Lots of holiday fun for the entire family at the only outdoor ice skating rink in Napa Valley. Napa on Ice is located at the corner of 2nd and Coombs Street in Downtown Napa. $12 for skating and skate rentals. They will be open from 10am-10pm all weekend.

Head to Yountville’s Festival of Lights-Don’t miss the chance to attend one of Yountville’s memorable events, Yountville’s Festival of Lights. This annual holiday faire features food, wine and entertainment town-wide. Enjoy visits with Santa Claus, carolers and horse-drawn carriage rides. In the evening, Yountville is set aglow with thousands of twinkling lights adorning trees and shops along Washington Street.Friday, 23 November, from 2:00-6:00 PM.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend!

Coming Up: 8th Annual Lighting of the Snowmen at Cornerstone

We have enjoyed this wonderful festive event every year. Cornerstone really knows how to throw a party complete with Santa sightings, ballet shows, holiday movies and yummy food! Just a few tips I have learned: I would recommend getting there early or be prepared to park in the lot at Jacuzzi (which is free) and they will shuttle you over. Parking at Cornerstone will be $5 this year with all proceeds going to Pets Lifeline. I also bring flashlights for my kids and lots of warm clothes.

When: Saturday, November 24th festivities begin at 4pm
Where: Cornerstone Gardens
Cost: Admission to Sonoma Valley’s traditional holiday kick-off event is free and open to the public.

Parking:
Complimentary Parking and shuttle will be available from Jacuzzi Wines – 2 minutes south of Cornerstone on HWY 121. The complimentary shuttle service will be leaving every 15 minutes from Jacuzzi’s lot, starting at 3:30, to take you to and from the event.

Onsite Parking will be available on a first come basis for $5/car with 100% of the proceeds going to Pets Life Line.

Be the first to see with the Snowmen will be doing this year at the Annual Lighting of the Snowman Event at Cornerstone.

This year enjoy:

• Live music by Robert and Amy Ethington in the “Winter Crystal Grove”

• a stunning holiday performance by the Sonoma Ballet Conservatory in the Tent,

• Holiday children’s films in the olive grove cinema

• Pictures with Santa throughout the event on the big blue chair!

• Holiday Beer Garden complete with lederhosen bar people and take away steins.

Coming Up: Free Sunday Art Play at Artescape

The wonderful new art studio on Sonoma Highway in Boyes Hot Springs, will be hosting a free play day on Sunday, December 4th. Make gourd Christmas ornaments with Janis Kobe and Thena Trygstad. Drop in only from 11:00-3:00pm, no registration required. For more information click here. They are located at 17474-A Sonoma Highway, Sonoma in the back. My kids attended a watercolor workshop this summer and absolutely loved the instructors and the clean bright art studio to work in. We may have to hit this one!
